Madam Chair,
I have the honor to deliver a statement on behalf of three countries, Canada, Japan, and the United States of America regarding our recent collective contributions to the Renovation of the IAEA’s Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf, the ReNuAL project. During the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Preparatory Committee meeting held this spring in New York, our three Member States each announced significant new contributions in support of ReNuAL, totaling 1.03 million euros. With these pledges taken into account, we have now fully met the 3.75 million euro extrabudgetary funding need identified last year by the Director General. These contributions will enable the complete fit-out of the new ReNuAL facilities in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
We wish to emphasize that we view our support for ReNuAL as an integral part of our support for the promotion of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy under the NPT. We look forward to the early completion of these new facilities and are confident that they will improve the IAEA’s capacity to provide crucial technical assistance to all of its Member States, and therefore hope that the project will be completed with wide-ranging support from Member States. We appreciate the continued efforts by Germany and South Africa, the Co-Chairs of the Friends of ReNuAL, to mobilize contributions and support for this important project as it nears completion.
